Texas Department of Transportation Website

Client: Texas Dept. of Transportation
UX/UI Designer: Hoyt Haffelder
TxDOT needed a new website. Their last website update was in 2012 and it showed. The information architecture, user experience, and interface design was outdated. The previous site’s organization mirror TxDOT’s organizational structure rather than content focused user-centered design.
I was happy to take over the project UX/UI role about half way through the development of the site. The opportunity allowed me to complete the design system, build out all the components, and wireframe most of the experiences on the site.
The new site was user-centered, visually oriented, and responsive. It’s weird to be excited about a responsive site in 2022 but this was a big win for Texans and the many government organizations that consider TxDOT one of the leading transportation agencies in the world.
Design System
The diverse nature of TxDOT’s website required many components, more than can be shown. These are some of the components. To maintain consistency, atomic level elements, colors, fonts, buttons, etc. were created first and then used to create more complex modules, such as cards, accordions, controls, etc.
Editorial Icons
In addition to the components I designed, I also designed the editorial icon system used on the website. Editorial icons allow for quick custom work visual when imagery isn’t called for or available
